The Ethiopian Association of Kitchener-Waterloo (EAKW) traces its roots back to 1991, when a small group of Ethiopian immigrants came together with a shared vision of building a supportive community. While early efforts were limited due to the small population at the time, renewed momentum in 1995 led to the formation of a dedicated committee and the development of a formal constitution -laying the foundation for the Association as it exists today.
What began as a modest, volunteer-driven initiative has grown into a vibrant, grassroots organization serving Ethiopians across the region. Over the years, EAKW has provided cultural and educational programs, supported newcomers in their integration into Canadian life, and created opportunities for connection, celebration, and mutual support.
Like many community organizations, EAKW has experienced both challenges and periods of renewal. Through resilience, strong volunteer commitment, and a deep sense of community, the Association has continued to evolve and thrive.
Today, as EAKW celebrates over 30 years of service, it stands as a home-away-from-home for many – honouring Ethiopian heritage while helping members build meaningful lives in Canada.
